Preventing Neck Pain When You Work at a Computer All Day

neck pain

Working at a computer all day increases your chances of neck and shoulder pain, stiffness, trouble turning your head, and experiencing muscle cramps or spasms. The cervical spine is delicate, and the weight of the head, especially if you’re looking up at a computer monitor or down at your keyboard, puts a lot of pressure on the structure of your neck. You can reduce your risk of neck pain by visiting our chiropractors in Rockwall and following these tips:

Adjust Your Computer Monitor

The center of your computer screen should be at eye level, so you aren’t looking upwards or downwards while typing. Use a monitor stand or adjustable monitor to ensure your screen is at eye level.

Maintain Proper Posture

Maintaining proper posture while seated at your computer desk all day can reduce your risk of neck and back pain. Use an adjustable chair that offers lumbar support and adjust the seat so that your feet are flat on the floor with your thighs tilted slightly downward, while your back is pressed against the back of the chair. If your feet don’t reach the floor, use a footrest. If your chair has armrests, make sure they allow your wrists to remain level and parallel to the desk while typing.

Keep Your Head and Shoulders Level

Keep your head straight and level while seated and keep your shoulders back and straight. This will reduce your risk of neck pain and strain.

Get Up and Stretch Regularly

Every hour or so, get up and stretch to reduce your risk of muscle stiffness and cramps. Using a sit-stand desk allows you to stand for part of the workday, which can also take pressure off of your neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Visit Our Chiropractors for Adjustments

Visiting our chiropractors regularly for chiropractic adjustments will help you maintain a straight, aligned, balanced cervical spine. Chiropractic adjustments combined with stretches and cold laser therapy can treat neck pain, stiffness, inflammation, loss of range of motion, and muscle cramps. Our chiropractors can also offer posture correction and suggest changes to your workstation to prevent future neck pain.
